Summer is one of the most intense periods for touring logistics. Festivals, open-air concerts, stadium and arena tours, sporting events, large-scale shows and other live events take place in parallel all across Europe.
During this period, as many as 15–20 tours may be running simultaneously for PLM Crew – and with sufficient driver capacity, we could take part in even more projects.
A tour can be 15 trucks. But it can be 45 too.
No two productions are the same.
A single tour or event may require 15, 20, 30, or even 45 trucks, depending on the production in question.
The number of vehicles does not simply depend on whether a full band or a solo artist is on stage. Even a world-class solo artist's production can travel with twenty or more trucks if the show's technical standard demands it.
The trucks can carry, among other things:
The required capacity is influenced by the size of the venue, the technical complexity of the show, the distances between countries, the load-in and load-out time windows, and also how many systems of a given production travel in parallel.
This is a special logistics world.
Change is not the exception. Change is part of the system.
In touring logistics, plans can change constantly.
The departure time may change. The next venue may change. The loading order may be rearranged. A production may decide to take a different route, or one of the units may need to leave earlier.
A professional Tour Driver does not treat this as a problem.
They know that in this profession, flexibility is a core competency.
They don't stress over every change – instead, they adapt, communicate, and know exactly what their own task is:
to get the truck safely, precisely and professionally from one venue to the next.
Behind the stage, hundreds of people may be working toward a single goal. Production, technology, catering, security, stage crew, logistics and drivers together form a system.
The Tour Driver is one of the key players in this system.
It's not about chasing kilometres.
Touring driving is a completely different world from conventional international freight transport.
It's not about covering the maximum possible number of kilometres every day.
The rhythm of the tour follows the production's schedule. The team often spends several days at a single venue, so driving days can alternate with longer periods of waiting and rest.
This means time for rest, recovery and preparing for the next task – and in many cases, it also means time to get to know the city where the production is currently working.
Berlin. Paris. Barcelona. Milan. Amsterdam. Copenhagen. Vienna. London.
